Confused Demo
While the demo is playing, hold A + B + C. Sonic will get confused, lose his place, and possibly die.
Submitted by - Simon Jackson
Control Mode
At the title screen, press Up, C, Down, C, Left, C, Right. While playing, you can pause the game and use A to restart, B for slow motion, and C for frame advance.

Debug Mode
Enable Control Mode. After pressing Start to begin a game, hold A until you see Sonic. If you see a bunch of hex numbers on the top of the screen, you're in Debug Mode.
To start debugging, press B, then you can select any sprite in that level and put it on the screen. To select a different sprite, press A, and to place it on the screen, press C. Note that sprite selection is different from Zone to Zone. Also, instead of displaying the time elapsed, it displays the number of sprites currently on the screen. Control Mode functions work as well.

Note: This only works on the first production releases of Sonic.

Extra Lives
In Green Hill Zone - Act 3, there is a 1-Up at the very bottom of the level. Collect it along with enough rings to make 100 for a second life. Next, grab the 1-Up at the top of the loop-de-loop and die. Repeat until you have enough lives.

Get all Emeralds
This cheat allows you to start at the First Level with all the Emeralds, and with lots of Continues. Use the Level Select cheat (see above) to get to the Special Zone. When you get the Emerald, and have entered into the First Zone, press Reset.
Use the Level Select cheat to get to the Special Zone again. When you get the next Emerald, and have entered the First Zone, press Reset again.

When you have all the Emeralds, continue on with the first level. You get to keep the Emeralds and the Continues accumulated so far.

Level Select
At the title screen, hold A then press Up, Down, Left, Right. When you hear the chime, press Start.
If that doesn't work, try this: at the title screen, press Up, Down, Left, Right, hold A, and press Start. After doing this once, you only need to hold Start + A to enter the level select.

Marble Zone Shortcut
In Marble Zone act 3 you will find three chandeliers with spikes in them. Go to the far wall (on the right) and jump to the right to find some goodies. Now jump through the wall on the right again, but be careful of the other chandelier.

Scrap Brain Teleport
On the last level (Scrap Brain), find the ledges that move right then left. Go to the left side of the wall and wait for the platform to move. As soon as it starts to move left, duck. You'll go through the wall. While here, press Left to teleport right and Right to teleport to the left.

SonictheHedgehog2

Level Select

Go to Options on Title Screen. Go to Sound Test. Play songs 19, 65, 9, 17. If you hear a chime, the code is correct. Leave the Options menu. On Title Screen, hold A and press start.

Debug Code
Do the Stage Select Code above. Go to Sound Test on Stage Select Menu and play songs 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4 (Sonic 2's release date: November 24th, 1992). You will hear a chime if you did this correctly. Then hold Button A and press start on the stage you want. In the game, Button B selects debug mode or normal Sonic, button A will change the object that you are, and button C places the object on the screen.

Slow Motion
Perform the Debug Code and during the game press start to pause, then press and hold button B.

Frame By Frame
Perform the Debug Code and during the game press start to pause, then press button C to move one single frame.

Instant Super Sonic
Do the Stage Select Code above. Go to Sound Test on Stage Select Menu and play songs 4, 1, 2, 6. Then pick a stage, collect 50 Rings, and jump to become Super Sonic!

Fourteen Continues
Do the Level Select Trick above, reset, and select Options on the title screen. On Sound Test, play sounds 1, 1, 2, and 4. Then move to the Character Selection Option and press Start.

Get All Emeralds Before Starting the Game
Perform the Level Select code and in the level select menu, go to Special Stage. Win the stage and collect the emerald. It will then start the game. Push reset, do not turn of the power, and perform the Level Select again. Go to special stage and win the next emerald. And push reset. Keep doing this until you have all six emeralds, and on the sixth emerald do not reset it again, but let it keep going and start the game from the beginning.

Ashura the Hedgehog
To do this cheat you must first enter the stage select codes. Play as Sonic on Emerald Hill Zone. Press B to turn into an item. press A & cycle through the items until you get an item that looks invisible (it's right after the thing that looks like four rings). Place a bunch of the waterfalls until the ring counter gets a bluish tint. press B again to change to Sonic. Walk around a bit & you'll be Ashura. He should be just like Sonic only black and green instead of blue.

Super Sonic and Super Tails at the same time
Go into options and make sure it's Sonic and Tails. Enter in stage select, go into the stage select screen, then enter in the super Sonic and debug codes. Go into Emerald Hill (or any zone with Tails in it), turn into a ring, and give Tails lots of rings. Turn into super Sonic, then turn back into a ring. Flip through the items until you get to the item box. Make one, turn back into Sonic and pop it. When it gets back to normal, Tails will have sparkles, Sonic will look like Super Sonic, but he is just like normal. Get hit by a robot, and turn back into a ring. Give Tails lots of rings, and turn back into Super Sonic. Sonic and Tails both are now Super!

Hyper Sonic
Go to Oil Ocean Zone, Act 2 and go foward until you see the green jet power springs. Hop on the very last one and hold Right. You will hit a section of spikes and will fall back down into the side of the wall (where if you look closely, there are spikes right below you). Jump out (before the spikes kill you) and you will notice you will jump much higher (like Hyper Sonic). You won't change color and you are not invincible, and the effect is only temporary.

Mega Sonic
Go to Oil Ocean Zone, Act 2 and follow the directions listed above to become "Hyper Sonic." Now collect 50 rings and jump, and you will become Mega Sonic. Mega Sonic is much faster and can jump much higher (like Hyper Sonic). Like Hyper Sonic, however, Mega Sonic doesn't change color and isn't invincible, and the effect is only temporary.

Tails to Miles Mode
On title screen, press Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Up. You should hear a chime if you entered the code correctly. What the code does is make the game call Tails, Miles in certain parts, and supposedly vice versa.

Two Tails in Sky Chase Zone
Enter the Stage Select and Debug Codes, then go to Sky Chase Zone. Using the debug mode, create a transfer box (like in the competition) and break it open. When you hear Sonic die, press Button B to enter debug mode again. Move the cursor up until you see Tails and exit debug mode. To finish, jump and you will have two Tails under you.

Wing Fortress Shortcut #1
Kill the very first Clucker you come to in the Wing Fortress. Jump on the turret, run and jump on to the platform to the right. It is hard but you can make it. Above you will see spinning blades. Jump into them and you will be sucked up, without being hit, halfway through the level!

Wing Fortress Shortcut #2
In the Wing Fortress Zone, go as far as you can into the stage without climbing. Make sure you have collected some rings along the way. When you see blades blocking your way, go ahead and and hit them. As soon as you're invincible, walk through them. Jump on the platforms to the right, and half the level will be finished.

Play at night
To play at night, enter the Debug code above, then hold C and press Start to begin a level.
Shielded Tails
To give Tails a permenate sheild, enter debug mode above and hit a shield. Then place a teleport box down and hit that.

Game Genie Codes

There are 2 versions of this game. If the "A" codes don't work, try the "B" codes.

Sonic and Tailsbr>
Level Select
On the title screen of the game gear version press Up, Up, Down, Down, Right, Left, Right, Left, Start.
Press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, 1 for the Master System version.

Sound Test
From the title screen, press Down, Down, Up, Up, Left, Right, Left, Right, 1, 2, Start. I don't know if this works in the Master System version.

Sonic Fireball
At the sound test menu, rotate the d-pad in a quarter circle, down, down-right, right + 2 (you guessed, the same motion for a fireball in Street Fighter 2!!). You will now be able to throw a fireball in the game. Neat! I don't know if this works for the Master System Version.

Invinciblity
Select Sonic, then hold Up and continuously jump. Eventually Sonic will begin flashing. Note: the invincibility will end when Sonic stops running. I don't know if this works in the Game Gear version.

Fast Run
Press Up + 1 or Up + 2. I don't know if this works in the Master System version.

Quick Emerald
Press Up, Down, Up, Down, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 at the Sonic/Tails selection screen to automatically receive an emerald during level 1.

twice quickly. When you get out of the special stage you will look like that object for the rest of the level.

Debug Mode
from Tim Barr and Garrett Hogg
Enter the Level Select code, then press A + Start to choose your starting level. Once the action starts, press C to create an item, B to toggle between items,
and A to select items. Alternatively, turn on the Genesis and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up Up before Sonic gets fully on screen.

If those methods don't work, try this. First you must have Sonic 2. Hook it up and put in the level select code, then put in the debug code and press START.
When the screen with Sonic & Tails (Miles) pull out the game but DON'T turn it off and plug in Sonic 3. Now hold Up + A and press RESET.

while playing press B turn into a sprite press A to change and C to paste it.

Different Battle Music
from Tony (rzor1@aol.com)
Just before Before you fight Robotnik in the Hydrocity Zone, act 2, the boss music will come. Keep Sonic's head under the shallow water until he is about to
drown, then pop out of the water. You will hear the boss music from Sonic and Knuckles.

Easy Emeralds
from Pingi Guadalupe and LilChango1@aol.com
To gain all the chaos emeralds, enter the Level Select code, then highlight "Special Stage" and press C + Start. After receiving the emerald, press A + Start
and repeat the process until you have them all.

Alternatively, enter the Sound Test code and play sounds 2, 4, 5, 6 in order. If you did it correctly, the Emerald sound will play.

Extra Lives
To do this trick you must get to the first level of the Launch Base Zone. Set off the first alarm, stop Sonic in the middle of it, and do a Spin-Dash attack. The
flybots will continue to attack, and eventually their value will increase to 10,000 points! Every five flybots will gain you a life and, if you're patient enough, you
can earn up to 99 lives!

Extra Rings in Debug Mode

Repeat this process and you can gain up to 900 rings and several 1-ups.

Level Select
from DeepC3603@aol.com
There are two level select codes for Sonic 3. The second method is easier, but requires a copy of Sonic 2. Here's how to do each of them:

Method 1:
Immediately after the SEGA screen appears, Sonic will charge at you in a ball. While he's doing this, quickly press Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up,
Up. Timing on this trick is crucial.

Method 2:
This code requires a Sonic 2 cartridge. Insert Sonic 2 and enter the Sonic 2 Level Select (play sounds 19, 65, 09, and 17). Return to the title screen,
hold A and press Start. To transfer this to Sonic 3, hold A and carefully remove the cartridge without turning off the Genesis. Insert Sonic 3 and press
Reset. Finally, release A and press Down twice at the main menu.

Note: You'll notice a few levels you haven't seen before, but you can't select them. Since the U.S. version is only 16 megs compared to the Japanese 24-meg
cart, those levels had to go.

Oil Ocean Music
from Roadkill! (roadkill6@hotmail.com)
Here's a way to play the Oil Ocean music through the whole game. Go to the OPTIONS screen and enter sounds 1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4. You should hear the
Oil Ocean music. Next, hold A + Start and you should return to the SEGA screen with the Oil Ocean music still playing.

Enter the Level Select code, then press C + Start to choose your starting level.

Random Starting Location

different area. Beware, for you may start out in a wall.

Super Shortcut in Competition
from bbayles@geocities.com
Go to Competition and select Balloon Park. Instead of going forward, fall down backward to land on a yellow balloon. Hold LEFT, You should walk on the
ceiling. You will disappear and keep going until you win!

Super Sonic
To become Super Sonic without getting all the Chaos Emeralds, first enable the level select and debug mode. When the game begins, create a power-up box.
There should be an 'S' on the box. Jump on it to grab 50 rings and become Super Sonic!

Super Tails
from Greg Rozelle (greg@hotmail.com)
Enable Level Select, then press Down to make sure you have the sound test (don't select it yet). Start a one-player game and choose Tails in the Data Select
screen. When the timer appears, press RESET.

Enter the Sound Test menu and choose any zone. Hold A and press Start. You should be Tails and be in debug mode. From here press B, then press A until
you see a box. Press C to select it, then press B to return to Tails.

To enable Super Tails, jump on the box. Tails will look weird and can not be hurt or lose any rings. He can still get squashed and drowned, though, so be
careful in the Ice Cap zone. You will have do this at the beginning of each zone. Robotnik can hurt him at the very end of Launch Base zone-act 2.

Note: In case you're wondering, I've left out the passwords deliberately. There are over 32,000 bonus rounds in Sonic & Knuckles. I can't possibly list them
all on the page, nor is there much point to doing so since the levels are nearly identical. Thank you.

It allows you to listen to the regular music, a good mix, and a bad mix, for each level. 25' Finally, if you can beat this time another menu item appears. To the left of D.A. Knuckles Chaotix

50,000 Point Bonus
When you are able to collect all the chaos rings, the special stage entrance still appears after collecting fifty rings. This time, the stage appears in a wire frame form which makes it harder. Finish the stage and you get 50,000 points!

Cut the Cord
In Botanic Base, it is easier to beat the boss by losing your partner. This gets rid of that annoying bungee mode and you can just hit the boss from the bottom.

Different Music in Techno-Tower
In Techno-Tower Zone, Acts 1 and 2, go in a bonus stage, then leave. Right when the screen goes from white to the zone, PRESS PAUSE IMMEDIATELY! This will let you play with different music from another Zone for the rest of the act!

Easy Chaos Rings
Start a game and save through Manual Save. Go through the level and play the special stage. If you win, exit the game at the world entrance to save. If you don't win the Ring, hit RESET. Your loss will not be counted neither will your passing the level. With this, you can have all five Chaos Rings and only have passed five levels!

Playing Tip
When choosing characters it's best to consider what you need for the next level. For example, if you're after raw speed the combination of Mighty and Espieo can't be beat. For power, Hevey and Espieo are your best bet, and for moments when you need both (like fighting bosses) try Charmie and Hevey.

Remove the Bungee code in Marina Madness
In Marina Madness Zone, get rid of your partner. Then quickly find a yellow ship button that will move a ship. Step on it, and you will play without the bungee cord for the rest of the act.

Tempo Control
On the Sound Test screen you can use buttons X and Y to select MONO or STEREO sound and change the tempo of the music.
